The La Dorada-Santa Marta railway corridor saw a 12% increase in cargo transportation in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022.

According to the National Infrastructure Agency-ANI, which oversees the corridor, the railway transported nearly 8 million tons of cargo, up from 7.1 million tons in the previous year.

The corridor spans 800 kilometres from La Dorada, situated between Bogota and Medellín and the coastal city of Santa Marta. The corridor is split into two parts.

In the La Dorada-Chiriguaná section (operated by the Consorcio San Felipe), approximately 64,000 tons of cargo were transported, including coal, foodstuffs, ceramics, and minerals, with 21,000 tons moved in March alone. This compares to just 2,668 tons moved during the first quarter of 2022. Coffee is among the new products being transported, reflecting the renewed confidence in rail transport.

In the Chiriguaná-Santa Marta section, Fenoco transported 7.8 million tons of coal in the first quarter of 2023, up from 7.1 million tons in the previous year. This corridor is strategically important for the logistics chain of production and export of coal, connecting the mines of the department of Cesar with the Caribbean ports.
