DB Cargo uses a combination of artificial intelligence and video gates to detect damage to freight wagon tarpaulins early on.

These tarpaulins may be considered a somewhat sidelined part of freight wagons. However, it is also necessary to pay great attention to checking the roof tarpaulins in order to protect the goods being transported. They are exposed to stresses such as weathering and sparks, and can become damaged during loading.

For this reason, DB Cargo uses video gates to provide a 'view from above' of the wagons: images are taken from different angles as they pass through. These images are analysed by AI models, and any damage is assessed by experts. If necessary, repairs are arranged before the wagons return to service.

This project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport through its programme to promote pioneering rail freight technology.
