The preferred option carries a base budget of around EUR 62m.

Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has launched a public consultation on plans for a new rail technical facility and a 3.65 km branch line serving the Port of Algeciras.

The project would add five sidings and associated tracks outside the port area to address capacity constraints, including 350 m train length limits at some terminals. The new branch would connect to the existing line between Maravillas Junction and Algeciras.

Two location options have been assessed, with the Botafuegos site identified as the preferred solution. The documentation includes environmental and cost-benefit analyses and will proceed to environmental review following the consultation phase.
